Summer residence of Queen Victoria, this small island of only 12 miles (19km) long is located just off the Hampshire coast and is a very popular destination during those nice warm summer days. A great part of the island is wooded and hilly with beautiful cliffs promoting a superb scenary of shapes and colours. It is also famous for its annual sailing regatta which takes place from the harbour at Cowes. Apart from its marvellous natural sights, the island has other charms to offer, like Osborne House where Queen Victoria spent her summers. The house is very well preserved and is a perfect example of the high domestic archtecture of the epoch. Frequent ferry, hovercraft, hydrofoil and catarmaran services from Southampton and Portsmouth plus a ferry from Lymington makes this island an easy place to access.
