Canterbury and the Surrounding Area

Canterbury, Herne Bay and Whitstable are fortunate in being surrounded by some of the finest countryside in the Garden of England where you will discover many pretty villages which have retained their unique charm and from the North Downs there are many breathtaking views to be enjoyed.

The whole area is particularly easy to explore by car, bicycle, public transport or on foot. Many small villages have a rail station and there are good bus links, so it really is simple to get right into the heart of Canterbury's beautiful countryside.

Visitors who like a taste of the action - whether as spectators or participants - are well catered for in the Canterbury area. No summer visit is complete without a trip to the St Lawrence Cricket Ground to see Kent in action. Cricket week in August brings a particularly festive atmosphere to the excitement of first class cricket.

Canterbury's new Kingsmead Leisure Centre is now fully operational. All the family will enjoy a visit to the brand-new Herons Swimming Pool in Herne Bay: Whitstable's new pool opens in the spring. For a complete contrast, watch greyhound racing at Kingsmead Stadium, test your skills at Planet Lazer, Whitstable Bowl or the clay pigeon shooting range at Sturry. The area also has a number of excellent golf courses.

Villages

The area is rich in fascinating villages well worth exploring. Most have a shop or a pub where you can order a snack or a meal with your drink. One of the best places to start your tour is Harbledown, scene of the last of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and within walking distance of the city centre. Lovers of wildlife will find much of interest in the nearby Forest of Blean. Fordwich, once the port of Canterbury, is famous for having the smallest town hall in England. Bishopsbourne, in the picturesque Nailbourne valley was the home of Joseph Conrad. Mozart stayed here in 1765. Nearby Bridge was a favourite haunt of Ian Fleming.

Walks, Trails & Tours

Walkers and cyclists will find themselves at the centre of a vast network of lanes and paths which will lead them through some of the finest areas of the Garden of England. The North Downs Way, often known as the Pilgrim's Way, is particularly popular and easy to follow. The Stour Valley Walk and the new Elham Valley Way are well publicised and for a breath of sea air why not try the Saxon Shore Way or the Wantsum Walk? Details of walks and cycle rides are available from all local visitor information centres.

Motorists can follow the East Kent Country Tour, a well signposted fifty-mile circular route south of Canterbury. The Tour takes in the prettiest villages and countryside in the area and is particularly attractive at blossom time. It is easy to join or leave the route at any point in order to explore other parts of the district.
