Cambridgeshire is a county of contrasts; a land steeped in history with a strong character all of its own and plenty to attract and occupy the visitor. Sample Cambridge's architectural treasures and absorb the atmosphere of historic colleges, old courts, winding streets and the beauty of the River Cam and the 'Backs'. Journey through the striking fen landscape and see the counterpane of farmland displaying shades of black, brown, yellow and green that typify the changing seasons of a rich agricultural region. For here is grown much of the staple food that makes up the British diet. The air is unpolluted and the sky plays a vital role in this flat landscape, changing from brilliant blue to rainbow arc to billowing storm clouds silhouetting tree clumps and occasionally windmill sails. It is worth coming to the Cambridgeshire Fens for the sunsets alone, but the premier attraction is Ely Cathedral 'the ship of the Fens'. Huntingdonshire's countryside is more gentle, providing a backdrop of willow-reflecting water banked by a succession of lovely villages and market towns. To the south of the county, around the City of Cambridge, the scenery becomes more undulating providing viewpoints from which to enjoy the skyline of this great university city. Peterborough sits on the divide between the flat Fens and the wolds of the East Midlands. It is a city where ancient and modern merge successfully - most strikingly seen in the centre where the impressive 12th century cathedral is juxtaposed with busy, thriving, modern shopping centres. The geology and geography of the county make it a treasure trove of wildlife; a haven for birdwatchers, fishermen, walkers, cyclists and those who love 'messing about in boats'. An excellent road system networks the county and fresh farm produce can often be bought by the roadside. Places to visit:More information and places to visit:
