At the heart of England's most northerly county lies the Northumberland National Park, stretching from the Cheviot hills in the north ti Hadrian's Wall 64 kilometres to the south. 1030 square kilometres in extent, this open landscape, rich in border history, encompasses heather moorland and silent forest, isolated farmstead and tree-sheltered valley.

The Cheviots' rounded grass-covered hills straddle the border of England and Scotland and carry the National Park boundary for a distance of 45 kilometres from Carter Bar to Yetholme Mains. This remote and challenging terrain is much favoured by walkers. Wardens organise a year round programme of guided walks, details of which can be found at Tourist Information Centres.
