Canterbury
In Canterbury's pedestrianised centre there is always something going on. International visitors mingle with street entertainers and local people in a lively melee. By day or by night you will find plenty to entertain you. The city's newest attraction is the Roman Museum underneath the Longmarket shopping centre, and for the discerning visitor the side streets and the riverside walks are an attraction in themselves. At the heart of the city, in tranquil precincts stands the Cathedral, probably best known as the site of the martyrdom in 1170 of Saint Thomas Becket. Together with Saint Augustine's Abbey and Saint Martin's Church (both outside the city walls), the Cathedral has been designated a World Heritage Site. Canterbury's position at the heart of East Kent puts visitors at the centre of a world of opportunity. Once you have settled into your accommodation, you will enjoy planning a whole range of exciting excursions. Just a short drive from Canterbury, Herne Bay and Whitstable, you will find castles, gardens, the varied coastline of East Kent, steam railways, wild animal parks, vineyards, funfairs and much, much more. Chatham with its fascinating Historic Dockyard, Rochester, Leeds Castle and Maidstone are all less than an hour's journey.
