King John

In October 1215 a force of rebel barons seized Rochester Castle and held it against the King. Within days King John had taken action. First he broke Rochester Bridge then he launched a massive seige against the castle itself. The seige lasted nearly two months until the castle fell on 30th November 1215.

Henry VIII

Henry VIII visited Rochester twice during his long reign. The first time was during a visit with Charles V, Emperor of Germany. The second time was to meet his future fourth wife, Anne of Cleeves at the King's Palace for the first time.

Sir Francis Drake

Although Sir Francis Drake was born in Devon, he moved to the Medway area when his father was instituted Vicar of Upnor in 1560.

Queen Elizabeth I

In 1573 Queen Elizabeth I paid a visit to Rochester during which time she honoured a huge mansion that once absorbed Longley House, the Friars and the Old Hall. Today a part if this house is called Satis House and can be found in Bakers Walk.

King Charles I

After 11 years in exile, King Charles II landed at Dover to begin his journey to London where he would take up the crown once more. His triumphant procession took him through Canterbury and on to Rochester.

King James II

Whilst fleeing from the uprising of the 'Glorious Revolution' led by his son-in-law, William of Orange and his daughter Mary, King James II spent his last night under guard at 'Abdication House' now Lloyd's Bank in the High Street in December 1689. From here he escaped to the Continent and was never to return.

Admiral Lord Nelson

According to records, Nelson started his service in the Navy at Chatham when he was 12 years old. His most celebrated ship, The Victory, was built at Chatham and launched in 1765.
