The City's Maritime and Military Past

Royal Engineers Museum

The City owes its very existence to the River Medway. From the garden of England, it has gathered its own particular character as it winds through the heart of Kent and into the City. The Medway Heritage Centre tells the story of the River Medway using photographs, paintings, models and artifacts.

The area has seen both naval and military action throughout the centuries. This is due to its position on the Rover Medway and the main London to Dover road.

Built in 1756 to protect the Royal Naval Dockyard from landward attack, Fort Amherst is thrilling complex of underground chambers and tunnels. The Royal Engineers Museum in nearby Gillingham provides a fascinating insight into the part played by our soldier engineers both in the past and up to the present day.
