![]() Fort Amherst Chatham is the largest of the towns which make up Rochester-upon-Medway. Naturally its most famous attraction is the Historic Dockyard. Over 4 centuries, no less than 400 Royal Navy ships where built at Chatham. Finally, having played an important role in the nation's defence for so many years the Dockyard was closed in 1984. Now, a living museum consisting of 80 acres which make up the Historic Dockyard, it contains no less than 47 scheduled ancient monuments forming the most complete 18th century Dockyard in the world. There is plenty more to see in the town itself which has excellent shopping facilities and delightful riverside gardens. St. Bartholomew's Chapel in the High Street is part of the original hospital which was founded by Bishop Gundulf in 1078. No.2 (now No.11) Ordnance Terrace was the home of the Dickens family from 1816 to 1821 and this is where the young Charles spent some of the happiest years of his life.
