They call it John Bunyan's Bedford and perhaps it's hardly surprising. For a lowly seventeenth century tinker to have risen to become one of the most celebrated writers in the English language was a feat indeed. The Pilgrim's Progress has been translated into into 200 different languages and was written in Bedford County Gaol where Bunyan languished for twelve years. Don't miss Bunyan's Meeting House and Museum to view many of his personal possessions and other relics. Visit Elstow, the village where this great non-conformist grew up and call into Elstow Moot Hall and Green. Look out for Bunyan's Mead cottages (not open to the public) and Elstow Abbey. Take a guided tour and see many more places which not only commemorate this great writer and preacher, but are a fascinating history lesson in themselves.
