Peterhouse, the oldest college, was founded by the Bishop of
Ely in 1284. During the next 700 years
others were established which today represent superb examples of different types
of architecture. The oldest colleges and university buildings situated in the
central area, are all within easy walking distance of each other. Visitors can
go into college courtyards, chapels and certain gardens at most times of the
year and guided tours of the city and colleges can be arranged by the Tourist
Information Centre in Wheeler Street. Today 31 colleges are attached to the
University. Among the most beautiful are Queens', Trinity, Magdalene,
St. John's, Clare, Jesus, Emmanuel and King's.
King's College Chapel is the jewel in the crown, a superb example of Perpendicular architecture. Its interior is perfectly proportioned, with wonderful 16th century stained glass and a magnificent Gothic-style fan-vault ceiling. Rubens' The Adoration of the Magi adorns the altarpiece. The chapel is best viewed from the river or the secluded walks of the 'Backs', a mixture of smooth lawns, formal gardens and informal open spaces on the banks of the River Cam.
