Punts (flat-bottomed boats) are part of Cambridge's character; in summer
chauffeured punts are available. The river is also used for rowing; but not
conventional racing. The Colleges and the city's clubs hold 'Bumps' races in
which about 15 boats begin in a line one and half lengths behind one another,
each boat has to catch up with the one in front. The University Bumps are in
February and June and the City Bumps in July.
There are also lovely walks and spots to picnic on the banks, at Lammas Land, Laundress Green and Jesus Green. Stroll through the formal lawns and flower beds in the University Botanical Gardens where the greenhouses are usually open to visitors in the afternoons. More information and places to visit:
