The nearby Gig Magog Hills offer excellent views of the spires and towers of
Cambridge and footpaths to Wandlebury Camp, an Iron Age fort. Grantchester, with
its buildings of thatch, timber and plaster, is a delightful walk across the
riverside meadows; one that Rupert Brooke, the poet, must have made on many
occasions when returning home to the Old Vicarage. Just outside Grantchester is
Byron's Pool, while the church at Trumpington has the second oldest brass in
Britain dated 1289 to Sir Roger de Trumpington. Four miles from Cambridge is
Madingley. Many come here on pilgrimages to the American Military Cemetary which
commemorates the lives of American Servicemen who operated from bases in Britain
in the Second World War.
