Railways

Impressive as its name suggest, Carlisle's Citadel station continues to bear witness to the importance of the city's role in Britain's railway heritage. By 1877, there were no less than seven different railway operators.

Today, it's still possible to travel near and far by rail from Carlisle - including a trio of day-excursions that really are the best in Britain. Try the world famous Carlisle-Settle route into the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, the Tyne Valley lines across the 'neck of England' to Hexham, Corbridge and Newcastle or the delightful Cumbrian Coast line, a route which travels twixt sea and mountain and even links with the Ravenglass & Eskdale miniature railway for a glorious ascent into the Lake District.
