ManchesterBorn from a Roman settlement, Manchester played an important part during the Civil War and the later Jacobite era. Its rapid development was due to its many merchants who by 1745 had realised the influence of politics on the trading market and started to pay lip-service to the Stuart cause whilst benefitting from the prosperity brought by Hanoverian rule.The upholding of the principles of Free Trade, which inspired the construction of the Free Trade Hall, is a pride for Mancunians. Many of its fine buildings were erected in Victorian times and the smoking chimneys left by the hard-headed Georgian merchants have now been replaced.
