Ancient Whitby, on a steep wooded inlet of the river Esk, offers a delightful combination of fishing port and holiday resort.

The old town of narrow streets and picturesque homes stands on the steep slopes above the river. Dominating the famous harbour are the ruins of an abbey, originally founded in 657AD.

Whitby is one of Britain's finest stretches of coast, with cliffs, fine bays and safe sandy beaches interspersed with attractive villages. It has been a port for more than 1,000 years and today is still a seafarer's town. Two of the ships sailed by Captain James Cook on his historic voyages - Resolution and Endeavour - were built in Whitby shipyards.

Its past and present have combined to make Whitby known to millions throughout the world. Even the town's darker corners have been immortalised in the classic Victorian novel Dracula. The author, Bram Stoker, set three chapters of the novel around Whitby. Today it is possible to retrace the steps of the undead on a 'Dracula Trail'.
