Built by the Romans in AD 71 under the name Eboracum, York started as a fortress for the Roman Ninth Legion and later became the capital of the northen province. In AD 866 it was captured by the Vikings who called it Jorvik and made it their chief trading base in Northen Europe. Although the Viking rule lasted for just less than a century, Scandinavian influence and custom continued long after the Norman conquest of Britain.

Surrounded by almost three miles of spectacular medieval walls, York is an example of truely impressive architecture. The walls were built in the 13th century on earth ramparts constructed by the Danes and enlarged by the Normans, and today they promote an incredibly beautiful walk around the city.

The Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral north of the Alps. Built between the 13th and the 15th century, it is a mixture of every Gothic style which predominated during that time. The stained glass is a remarkable feature of this marvelous building and is the largest single collection of medieval stained glass to have survived in England. The Shambles (originally called Fleshammels - the street of butchers) is probably the most popular of the medieval streets. Situated only a few minutes away is the Newgate Market which has centuries of trading tradition.

York also has an incomparable collection of museums which display the beauty and richness of the Roman, Viking and Anglo-Saxon cultures and their treasures.
