ShrewsburyThe old capital of the Welsh dominions of Powys, Shrewsbury is today one of the most important cities on the English side of the Welsh border. This lovely countryside town with elegant Queen Anne and Georgian buildings lies on the banks of the River Severn and is a place of medieval short cuts and alleyways. It is also the birthplace of the world famous naturalist Charles Darwin (who revolutionised the way we think about mankind) and of Clive of India. Both townsmen are celebrated with statues which remind visitors as well as the town people about their contributions to the world and their ideas which inspired thousands around the planet. Its border position is still, after centuries, symbolised by the two bridges over the Severn, The Welsh Bridge and the English Bridge, just beside the Benedictine Abbey. Built in the reign of Edward III, this magnificent abbey has Norman pillars in the nave dating from the 11th century when the building was founded. The Castle built in the same year (1083) by Roger de Montgomery was restored in the 14th century and converted into the home of Sir William Poultney in 1787 by Thomas Teldford. Today, after having being converted to the Council Chambers in 1926, the building houses the Shropshire Regimental Museum.
