LeedsThe cultural capital of Yorkshire, the city of Leeds enjoys a wealth of traditions as well as a rich past, all this blended with a lively and exciting modern life style.England's third biggest provincial city, Leeds is predominently of Victorian style with beautiful arcades and buildings that display all of the magnificence of that period. One such great example is Harewood House built by John Carr between 1759 and 1772. Over the past, the city has grown both culturally and economically and today offers a great number of museums and art galleries as well as a vast variety of entertainment combined with a very attractive night life. Founded in 1888, Leeds City and Art Gallery now houses an impressive collection of art dating back to around 1820 with the 20th century collection being the best of its kind outside London. Spread over 3 floors the gallery boasts famous Victorian paintings, superb collections of French post impressionist paintings, contemporay British sculpture and prints, watercolours and drawings. Amongst these exhibits are works by renowned Leeds artist Atkinson Grimshaw as well as pieces by Renoir, Lowry and the influencial British impressionist (and founder of the Camden Town Group) Walter Richard Sickert. Troughout the year workshops, talks and events aimed at all ages and abilities enhance a lively temporary exhibitions programme. Also known as the cultural capital of Yorkshire, Leeds offers a busy schedule of special events right through the year. Its year- round calendar of musical events, from avant-garde to classical, from high brow to low brow, attracts the best of British and international talent. The music menu during the summer is no exception, offering its own brand of entertainment - much of it free. Indeed, Leeds folk enjoy more free musical concerts than any other civic provision in Britain - and that is official; last year Leeds was awarded the major trophy of the National Music Council. Its open-air concerts during the afternoons of August in one of the glorious Leeds parks have become a hallmark of more balmy days in this colourful metropolis. It is impossible to talk about Leeds without mentioning the Waterfront. One of Europe's most surprising and fascinating landscapes, the Leeds Waterfront takes you on an unforgetable journey through time passing by the monastic middle ages, the first dawn of industrialisation, through the heady confidence of the Victorian era and on to the dramatic architecture of the twenty first century. With so much to see and do, Leeds is a city for everyone!
