Glasgow was founded in the mid-6C, when St Mungo set up his wooden church on the banks of the Molendiar Burn. Since then the city has grown immensely and during the industrial revolution Glasgow was, economicaly, the most important city in Scotland.

Many of the city's treasures are the inheritance of the great merchant dynasties and these include the Kelvingrove and Hunterian museums which are among the finest in the world.

Gifted by the shipowner Sir William Burrell (1861-1958), the extraordinary and vast Burrell Colletion ranges from Chinese ceramics and Japanese prints to every kind and period of European art.

Glasgow Cathedral is another of the city's charms. Built mostly during the 13C and 14C with 15C additions, this wonderful masterpiece is an unforgetable sight. The nave is late Gothic and its marvelous moulded and pointed arches rise to the timber roof. In the lower church is the tomb of St Mungo, Glasgow's patron saint, whose life is portrayed on St Kentingern Tapestry (1979).

This remarkable city, which for many centuries served as Scotland's economic foundation, now enjoys the growing reputation for being the arena for Scotish Opera, Ballet and the arts.
