Perth
The Fair City of Perth lies at the very heart of Scotland. Here, at the nation's crossroads, has grown up an attractive, compact and prosperous city on the banks of the great River Tay. Perth is reknowned for both salmon fishing and for fresh water mussels which produce fine, beautiful pearls. In recent years, Perth has received numerous accolades, including "Scottish Tourism City of the Year" and "Best Quality of Life in Britain". In the immediate vicinty of this magical city there is much of interest to be discovered. Abernethy, once an important Pictish settlement, has a well-preserved 11th Century Round Tower. The Perthshire Visitor Centre at Bankfoot is home to the multi-media presentation "The Macbeth Experience". Along the Carse of Gowrie, 16th Century gardens at Megginch Castle can be visited, and Errol's restored Old Railway Station is open on Sunday in summer. To the north-east Dunsinane Hill of "Macbeth" renown is topped by an ancient hill fort. Almost as old are the remains of Roman signal stations at Gask, west of Perth. Wooded Glenalmond is specially picturesque in spring and autumn, while nearby Pitcairngreen is a pretty hamlet with an English-style village green.
