Knaresborough
Perched, it seems, almost precariously on cliffs rising steeply from the River Nidd, Knaresborough is a delightfully picturesque market town. Visitors are always captivated on catching their first glimpse of the viaduct view and the river complete with colourful boats. Part of this bustling settlement's appeal lies in the quaint and unspoilt quarters with their intriguing maze of alleys and ginnels; though the more obvious attractions are the fascinating places to visit and varied choice of accommodation, shops and refreshments. In addition to boating on the river many people enjoy the pleasant riverside walks, pausing for a pot of tea or an ice-cream whilst taking in the spectacular scenery. Then there are such curiosities as the restored St Robert's Cave and nearby Chapel of Our Lady in the Crag or a visit to the imposing parish church of St John the Baptist. A walk in the opposite direction leads to Conyham Hall grounds with extensive parking facilities, putting, tennis and space for relaxation. Standing supremely, high on the cliff top, are the ruins of Knaresborough Castle - mostly dating from the 14th century. The history of this fortress and its former inhabitants will intrigue you - as will a visit to the dungeon! Every Wednesday a busy market is held in the market place at which the traditional Town Crier performs his cries at the cross. Knaresborough is full of surprises, not least being an apparently chaotic patchwork of buildings clinging to the steep sides of the gorge which make their own contribution to the charm of this quaint and colourful town.
