Brampton

Wednesday is a good day to visit Brampton, when a small country market gathers in and around the Moot Hall - a market charter has been held by the town since 1252. A climb to the top of the Mote gives outstanding views and St Martin's Church, with stained glass windows to Burne-Jones' design by William Morris, is certainly worth a visit. A Shop on High Cross Street carries a plaque to mark the occasion in 1745 when it was the headquarters of Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jackobite army while they laid seige to Carlisle Castle. Ask at the Tourist Information Centre in the Moot Hall for the town trail leaflet.

The Beautiful scenery of the North Pennines, recently designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), is the setting for the South Tynedale narrow-gauge railway at Alston, England's highest market town.
