Church Stretton
©Copyright The Francis Frith Collection Church Stretton is at the centre of the South Shropshire Hills country, most of which is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Together with its neighbouring communities of All Stretton, Little Stretton and Minton, the town nestles in a narrow valley between the Long Mynd and the Stretton Hills. The Strettons and Minton between them provide a pleasant mixture of architectural styles. Black and White timber houses can be seen in all the communities, while the centre of Church Stretton is predominantly Victorian in character. There has been a market for in the town since King John's time and a weekly market is still held every Thursday in the Square. The Parish Church of St. Laurence is probably a Saxon foundation, but the Norman nave is the oldest part of the present building. The transitional columns and their capitals at the crossing and the roofs are interesting. There is a Shiela na Gig, a Saxon fertility symbol, over the outside of the Norman north door. The town's shops offer an excellent range of high quality goods at reasonable prices. Strettons shopkeepers take care to make the visitor feel welcome. Around and about are wonderful walks and rambles offering peace and quiet and, even today, a considerable measure of solitude.
