Aylesbury
©Copyright The Francis Frith Collection Aylesbury is a bustling market town and the market has been an essential part of Aylesbury life since the early 13th century. Nowadays regular markets are held on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The town has a rich and varies history, many clues to which can be seen in the conservation area to the north of the market square. In this area stands the 15th century Kings Head Public House, the Saxon Church of St Mary and the Buckinghamshire County Museum. The statue of John Hampden at the top of the Market Square gives a further insight into the town's history. As M.P. for Wendover at the time of the English Civil War, John Hampden was a key figure in the defeat of the royalists. Nowadays one of the more famous buildings in Aylesbury is the Stoke Mandeville Hospital, renowned as an international centre for spinal injuries. For the past 40 years the hospital has welcomed thousands of athletes for its annual wheelchair games.
