Southsea: The Resort Within a City

Southsea's four mile long promenade. with its sweeping views across the Solent, attracts visitors all year round with its lively, sophisticated and varied attractions. There's fun and fascination at some of the resort's leading attractions and the chance to relax on the beaches.

For those who wish to do more than lie on the beach there are major attractions that run east in sequence from the Sea Life Centre, the D-Day Museum, Southsea Castle, the Pyramids complex, the Natural History Museum and Butterfly House to the Royal Marines Museum.

At almost every point along the seafront there are broad green areas for picnics and games. Sit and relax or fly a kite on Southsea Common with its vast lawns and award winning flower gardens. Southsea's superb floral decorations are current winners of the 'Best Park in Southern England' and the 'Best Inner City' category of the 'Britain in Bloom' competition.

Enjoy taking a boat out onto the Canoe lake or relax in the peace and quiet of the Rose and Venetian Gardens. Take time out to browse through the Southsea Shopping Centre just five minutes walk from the front, and well worth a visit.

As well as the department stores and the many household names that can be found there is also a wealth of interesting and, in some cases, unusual independent retailers. Amongst this fascinating selection there are tea rooms and numerous restaurants and bars where a welcome break can be taken from the bustle of this lively area.

South Parade Pier, Clarence Pier and Fun Acres offer traditional seaside entertainment and provide a wonderful view point to watch the coming and going of the many vessels that use the Solent.

For those who want to venture onto the waters of the Solent there are regular boat trips and the only scheduled Hovercraft service in Britain. Just watching the Hovercraft as it roars up the beach in clouds of spray is itself spectacular.

Southsea is... days on the beach, relaxing in the park, enjoying the attractions, strolls along the promenade, superb shopping and lively entertainment - everything that an ideal holiday can offer.
