Situated on the University campus the John Hansard Gallery is a showcase for a wide range of work from artists of national and international repute. The Mayflower Theatre is the region's principle venue for opera, ballet and large scale musicals. Smaller venues such as the Nuffield Theatre and the Turner Sims Concert Hall also have excellent and well deserved reputations. The new Harbour Lights Film Theatre, together with the MGM Multiplex at Ocean Village have established Southampton as the South Coast's cinema capital. Southampton has a rich and varied heritage. A Roman garrison was stationed on the River Itchen; and the port known as Hamwic was once one of Europe's principle trading centres in Saxon times. Southampton was also once a vibrant Medieval Town which can still be visited today. The remains of the Medieval town walls are among the best preserved in the UK.
