A Green City with a Sporting Tradition
Acre for acre, Southampton is one of the greenest cities in the country with parks, gardens and walkways the envy of other urban centres. The City Centre itself is graced with some glorious parks and greenways and Southampton in full bloom is a sight not to be missed. A vast tract of green and open space - the Common - lies at the very heart of the city. The Hawthorne Urban Wildlife Centre, based on the Common, recreates many if the natural habitats found in the city. There are further opportunities to learn about Southampton's sensitively managed flora and fauna on a number of free guided park walks which take place all year round. Southampton in steeped in sporting tradition and offers excellent opportunities the the sports lover. Premier League Soccer and First Class Cricket are both played in the city. The region is one of Europe's busiest centres for waterborne activities. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced ocean racer you can sail around Southampton's waters on a range of offshore sailing courses. The region has long been associated with some of the country's great athletes including Roger Black and Kriss Akabusi. Both trained on the athletic track at The Sports Centre. Watersports, orienteering and mountain biking enthusiasts are well served by Southampton and its range of activity centres. Southampton's sports and leisure centre boast some of the best facilities in the region. Tennis enthusiasts will find excellent facilities in the city's Indoor Tennis Centre. Southampton has three Leisure Centres offering everything from pitch & putting to pentanque, or tennis to trampolining!
