A Place to Study![]() Southampton University Southampton is a fine place to study, with some of the South's principle Higher Education Institutions being based in the city. From modest beginnings as the Hartley Institute last century and following a period as a University College of London, the University of Southampton gained its own Charter in 1952. Since then, the University has expanded into a flourishing place of learning and research, welcoming around 3,500 students each year. Since it gained its independence in the University sector Southampton Institute has entered a period of dynamic growth. Two other major educational institutes in the city: La Sainte Union College of Higher Education and Southampton Technical College are continuing to flourish and Southampton is also home to a number of British Council recognised English Language Schools.
