WindsorThis charming small English town with cobbled streets is the standing ground for Windsor Castle - the largest castle in the country and also the largest inhabited stronghold in the world. The castle has been a favorite royal residence since William the Conqueror first built a motte and bailey on the site in 1070 and since then it has been frequently extended and rebuilt to accomodate the taste of its new masters. Its famous outline which consists of machicolated walls, several towers and the huge Round Tower, was built by Sir Jeffry Wyatville under the regency of Charles II.The whole building is a spectacular collection of architectural styles from different periods, each of which is such inspired work that they stand in perfect harmony to each other creating a delightful and fascinating atmosphere. As you enter the castle through Henry VIII's Gateway, built in 1511 and bearing the king's arms, on the right is the St George's Chapel. This marvellous example of Perpendicular style houses the remains of notable kings such as Henry VIII and Charles I. Queen Mary's Doll's House designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, with the aim of raising money for a children's charity, is one of the most visited sights at Windsor. An exhibition of toys and which belonged to our present Queen and Princess Margaret is currently being displayed. There are a number of tours available. They usually last around 45 minutes and take visitors to the main rooms in the castle. In Windsor, as at Buckingham Palace, the changing of the guard takes place every day during the summer and every other day
