Arts All Year Round

In the UK 1995 has been designated Year of Arts and Culture, and Brighton & Hove is Britain's arts and culture resort! Take the theatre for example. Many shows destined for the West End are previewed here - at out-of-town prices! The beautiful Theatre Royal is a stylish venue for top stars. Brighton is also a key date for domestic and international touring ballet companies, dancers and choirs. Brighton' & Hove's other theatres - the Dome Theatre, the Pavilion Theatre, the Gardner Centre at the University of Sussex, the Sallis Benny, the New Venture, the Little Theatre and the new Komedia Theatre for fringe and experimental theatre - all ensure that there is unmatched variety for theatre lovers. In Brighton & Hove theatre is in season through the year!

Fine art is well represented here too. Art galleries include the Barstow and Brighton University Art Gallery as well as the municiple galleries of Brighton and Hove which house permanent collections and frequent touring exhibitions, with strong selections of English oils and watercolours from the 18th century right up to the present day. As anyone who comes to Brighton & Hove for its shopping will soon discover, we also have many commercial galleries and antique art shops, especially in The Lanes and along Hove's Church Road. And check out the arches along Brighton's refurbished Lower Promenade for a range of arts and crafts shops...

The Dome theatre hosts regular concerts and recitals from some of the world's top performers. It's also one of the best venues in the Big Resort for top quality amateur or semi-professional concerts. The Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra also performs regularly in the Big Resort. Close by is Glyndebourne with its international summer opera festival attracting the very best musicians and singers from around the world. Experience an evening here with a black tie picnic on the lawn. Another speciality of Brighton & Hove: with so many restaurants competing for business, many eateries, cafes and bars offer additional attractions along with the food - live music, virtuoso solo performances, comedy, jazz clubs, cabaret and poetry. Few British cities can rival our year-round live entertainment!

During the Brighton Festival in May, local artists create instant mini-galleries by opening their own homes to visitors. And throughout the year street artists create three-minute masterpieces on the pavement in Churchill Square while buskers serenade and bands play in the Pavilion grounds and one the seafront.
